Heed Miss Chance to Close Gap on Rivals; Dover 1 GATESHEAD 0

GATESHEAD are running out of games and bodies as they look to make a late surge into the Vanarama Conference play-offs, writes JEFF BOWRON.

The Tynesiders, again without nine players on Saturday, remain six points adrift of the top five with games in hand, despite a narrow defeat at Dover Athletic.

A game of few chances was settled early in the second half by a wonder strike by Connor Essam, a depleted Gateshead rarely threatening an equaliser.

With little scope to manoeuvre, manager Gary Mills gave 17-yearold attacking midfielder Jake Orrell 25 minutes in the second half in place of Rob Ramshaw.

But with a number of key players missing, a battling Heed lacked the creativity to open up Dover, who completed a notable double in their first season back in non-league's top flight.

Offensively, the Heed will be strengthened by the return of 11-goal top scorer Alex Rodman at Halifax tomorrow, the first of two six-pointers this week, Eastleigh arriving on Saturday. …
