Woman Recalls Night of Hell; Aid Worker Spent Night in Bathroom as Pam Tore By

BUDERIM woman Lyn Cox went to Port Vila in Vanuatu for a "healthy tooth'' conference and ended up staying for Cyclone Pam, which killed 16 people and has left 65,000 homeless.

But if you thought living through a category 5 cyclone packing winds of 250kmh had the 53-year-old rattled, you would be wrong.

The coordinator for Churches of Christ Medical Santo was remarkably calm as she told of her night in a small motel bathroom near the beachfront as the cyclone ripped homes apart.

"On the Friday morning (March 13) they boarded up the windows of our motel room," Lyn said.

"We went out and bought bottles of water, long life milk, some crackers and honey. There wasn't a mad rush, like you see here when things are happening.

"I checked the bathroom and thought it would be fine. I was on the first floor."

At 2pm, "it started to get windy and rainy" but Lyn continued to speak to her colleague, Chris Lancaster, who is also from the Coast. …
