The Wolfson boys basketball team came up one game short in its pursuit of the final four.

Visiting Gainesville fought hard in a back-and-forth game, going up for good late in the third quarter and holding on until the finish in an 72-67 win over the Wolfpack in the Region 1-6A final on Saturday night.

Wolfson (26-4) was Duval County's last remaining public school team alive in the postseason. Jackson bowed out a night earlier in the Region 1-4A final.

Gainesville (27-3) pushed a 47-44 lead early in the fourth quarter to as many as 10 points, although Wolfson wouldn't quit.

The Wolfpack chipped away, scratching back to as close as 69-67, yet could get no closer.

The Purple Hurricanes were good enough from the foul line, hitting 3-of-4 foul shots over the final 20 seconds and sealing the victory.

Tyriek Railey had 27 points for Wolfson to lead all scorers. Tommy Collins followed with 17.

Of the area's five regional final qualifiers, only one (Providence in Class 3A) made it to the state semifinals. …
