IT MIGHT come as a surprise to some that one of Toowoomba's best known and loved characters Joan Dunlop didn't much care for the Garden City when she first lived here.

The Chronicle's prolific Letter to the Editor writer had arrived here from England as a war bride in 1946 after the Second World War and by 1948 she was headed back to the Old Country.

"I came from Nottingham, you see, which is a big city," Mrs Dunlop explained.

"Toowoomba was much smaller then and I didn't like the heat or the flies.

"Those were the days of the night soil man coming down the back lane. Fortunately, I had a flush toilet."

Settled back in England, Mrs Dunlop had to return to Toowoomba in 1973 - and she's glad she did.

"I had to come and see my new grandchild," she said.

"And, I found the place so different.

"It seemed more like a city and alive.

"Well, I fell in love with my grandson, who is now a psychiatrist, and the next year I moved back again. …
