PERHAPS the best piece of advice I've ever had is this: "Always go to bed with a clean face. No matter how tired or tipsy you are, always take off your make-up and give your face a nice moisturise."

It's a pity I only read this bit of advice a couple of years ago.

Until then, there was many a night I flopped into bed tipsy (a euphemism for decidedly grogged up), and many more nights when I fell into bed too exhausted to bother with cleansing lotions and the like.

But those words, written in a magazine, gave me good insight.

Since then, no matter how tired I am, off comes the make-up, on goes the serum and the moisturiser. I confess it is a most hasty and slapdash routine, especially on "tipsy" nights, but at least I am moisturised when I hit the pillow, and in the morning my face feels clean and fresh.

It's worth the effort - in fact, so worth the effort, I have all but forgotten the mornings when I would wake up with tacky mascara gluing the eyelids together and foundation clogging the pores. …
