I THINK It's fair to say Teesside is leading the way in the fight against dementia.

That might sound like a bit over-the-top but it's so true, because some of our most high-profile figures have joined the Alzheimer's Society campaign to make sure Teesside is dementia-friendly. Gazette readers will know Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon has nailed his colours to the mast by becoming one of our Dementia Friends, following an awareness session with street wardens and bus station security staff.

He was following in the footsteps of Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald, who led the way on this front with Barclays Bank staff in the town centre, as well as Commons counterparts Alex Cunningham, Ian Swales and James Wharton.

Together they have all pledged to take action to make life better for the 1,600 people who are living with dementia in Middlesbrough and their loved ones, 1,950 in Redcar and Cleveland and the 2,777 across Stockton.

Becoming a Dementia Friend might not sound like a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it really does matter a lot to anyone whose lives have been affected by a devastating disease. …
