Tyneside Butchers Firm Increases Sales by 8%; FOOD

FAMILY rm Dicksons butchers is forging ahead with plans to modernise its shops as it seeks to grow its retail business, after a year in which turnover rose by 8% to PS10.6m.

Launched in one small shop in South Shields 61 years ago, Dick-Dicksons now has 240 employees, 24 retail outlets across Northumberland and Tyne and Wear and a factory at Middleelds Industrial Estate, producing Dicksons' range of meat products.

Despite enduring challenging times the rm grew turnover from PS9.8m to PS10.6m in the year ended June 30 2014, a period in which it also planned growth through a series of modern makeovers for its portfolio of shops.

Meanwhile, operating prot more than doubled from PS393,429 to PS739,032, a gure the rm put down to controlled administrative costs and increased gross prot, which rose from PS3.03m to PS3.39m.

e rm said the sales mix moved slightly towards the wholesale business during the year, due to static like-for-like retail sales, the closure of a shop and a small increase in sales to the major retailers.

However, it said the retail business delivers the better margin in challenging trading conditions and, while retail performance remains mixed, a commitment to investing in and evolving its retail business remains the board's central focus.

Two retail sites were retted during the accounts period, three more are earmarked for modernisation this year and a ret programme is continuing across outstanding sites in the estate.

Managing director Michael Dick-Dicksonsaid: "Ongoing investment, evolution of retail oering and growth in the number of retail outlets will accompany a drive to maximise utilisation of the production facility and generate additional sales in food service and the retailers, spearheaded by the commercial team. …
