Jacksonville Falls in Preseason Match; Keeper Sierra Keeps Armada in Game, but Battery Wins 2-0

The good news for the Jacksonville Armada: They won't have to play the Charleston Battery again in 2015.

The bad news?

The Battery provided plenty of that Sunday, peppering the net with 12 shots and handing the Armada their first home loss in a 2-0 preseason match at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The score would have been higher without the effort of Armada goalkeeper David Sierra, who made four official saves and several other vital interceptions while starting in place of first-stringer Miguel Gallardo.

The Battery, which defeated the Armada 1-0 in Charleston on Feb. 18, overran the Jacksonville midfield with a pressing game that left Armada coaches Jose Luis Villarreal and Guillermo Hoyos with plenty to work on.

"We're wanting to focus on the precision and the speed at which we're playing, which will obviously improve the overall game," Hoyos said through a translator.

The Armada struggled to connect their passes to support the strike trio of Marcos Flores, Jemal Johnson and Alhassane Keita, committing a string of turnovers. …
