United fans were left fuming at half-time when Tim Krul waited for Jermain Defoe before patting him on the back for his wonder strike.

After the game several United players did not stop to oer any explanation for the defeat.

e one player who did - Mike Williamson - was asked by the Chronicle if players REALLY cared about the club's recent results and whether they were as hurt as the supporters.

When asked if players cared about the situation, Williamson said: "It's (an) opinion but I can tell you that there is not one player in there that doesn't care. It hurts everybody."

Knowing that United players were facing a tidal wave of criticism in the coming days, Williamson added: "We have to go out there and face it. We are all professionals, and we play the sport because of passion and progression and wanting to be successful. Not one player goes out there and is not bothered about the result or their performance. For me it hurts me very deeply.

"People are entitled to their opinion but it's not the case."

Williamson suggested that a siege mentality was required at Newcastle now for the last seven games.

He said: "We aren't going to get any outside help and the lads know that. at's why we have to come together and stay together. …
