Country Championships Hailed a Success

RACING NSW chief executive Peter V'landys is determined to make the 2016 Country Championships Series bigger and better after its successful inception onto the racing calendar.

The series saw seven qualifiers and a wildcard event leading to a $300,000 final on day one of The Championships at Royal Randwick this week.

Despite the meeting in Sydney being postponed from Saturday to Monday due to wet weather, the series was hailed a success.

"The Country Championships Series has been a revelation, sparking an amazing amount of interest," Mr V'landys said.

"Next year's version is certain to become even bigger and better."

With such a widespread following, newspaper sports editors were invited to support their local horses in the final. TAB joined with The Championships by providing $5000 to the nominated charity of the winning sports editor's horse. The Cancer Council was the beneficiary of Artlee's win for Muswellbrook trainer Todd Willan. …
