No Shots Fired in RSL Development

A MAJOR redevelopment of the Toowoomba RSL Soldiers Memorial Hall has yet to start despite promises works would be well advanced by Anzac Day this year.

Toowoomba Regional Council, the Queensland RSL and Toowoomba RSL Sub-branch announced the multi-million-dollar redevelopment in April last year.

Plans were to demolish the rear of the building, subject to heritage regulations, and build a memorial park.

The sub-branch also announced a major redevelopment of the back half of the building into a restaurant or bar.

Mayor Paul Antonio said at last year's announcement that plans were to have the demolition works well advanced by April 2015.

But Cr Antonio yesterday admitted commercial negotiations had caused delays.

"There have been some successes," he said.

"A potential developer for the site is in the mix and is talking to all parties about their vision for the site.

"Progress has been hindered to some extent by changes in RSL personnel during the negotiation period and this has led to some complications. …
