CONFIRMATION came this week that sitting Nationals MP Thomas George has scraped back into the State seat of Lismore, which takes in Murwillumbah.

Mr George now holds the seat with a margin of less than 3% after previously enjoying a 24% buffer.

There's no denying the seismic shift that has taken place in the Northern Rivers political landscape. The region has gone from National Party heartland to three seats on a knife edge - the Tweed, Lismore and Ballina, the latter of which is now held by the Greens.

Mr George labelled this election campaign particularly "toxic".

"Two days here, two arrests at the pre-poll, my door at my campaign office glued up, I had to get a locksmith in to fix that up, signs completely defaced... ," he told those who gathered to hear the result in Lismore on Wednesday.

Mr George also stood by his party's promise to buy back petroleum exploration licences in an attempt to reduce the area of land subject to the possibility of coal seam gas mining, and also no doubt neutralise an issue that most commentators believe played the biggest role in the swing against him and other National Party MPs. …
