Cycling Has New Event; Two-Day Tour De Canetoad Begins in the Region Today

Events:

Today, 4pm: CQU Criterium

Tomorrow: 8km Time Trial

Tomorrow: 30km (about) road race

CYCLING: The first Tour de Canetoad begins today, with Mackay Cycle Club's Garry France hoping it becomes an icon of Mackay's sporting calendar.

The event organiser said there could be more than 50 riders taking part in the two-day event.

It starts at 4pm today, with the fast-paced action of a criterium at CQUniversity campus in Ooralea.

"It's a small street circuit loop about 700-800m long," he said.

"The university have given us permits to close off the roads, which has been really helpful."

"We go for about 30 minutes with a bell rung to signal the last two laps."

Tomorrow the cyclists will take part in an 8km time trial before having "a quick drink break" and getting back on the bike for the road race.

"Riders will meet at 7am at our Walkerston club house," France said. …
