AMONG the crowd of thousands at New Italy's Carnevale Italiano yesterday, harking back to their heritage was a popular topic for many.

Perhaps none more so than Dr Brian Pezzutti, whose great great-grandfather Antonio Pezzutti was one of the first Italian migrants to settle at New Italy in 1882.

Dr Pezzutti, chairman of the board of Northern NSW Local Health District, said the Carnevale, formerly known as Anniversary Day, was always memorable for Italian descendants.

"It's a very special day for me and this is one of the biggest crowds the carnevale's ever had," he said.

"My great great-grandfather, with Rocco Caminotti, selected this spot. He made a big mistake at first, in choosing this spot, but they were sent up here by (the NSW Government's) Henry Parkes to find some space.

"So they gathered the Italians together who'd been scattered across southern New South Wales, and by doing that he set up this place and from there on we've grown. …
