After qualifying as a chartered certified accountant with ACCA, Jonathan Blanchard was a main board finance director by the age of 32. He is also a true example of the diversity that a finance career can bring, having worked across many different industries - from wine to music to handbags, and now - bikes. Blanchard joined Evans Cycles as CFO in 2012.

"To be a true leader in business, you have to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk too. It's important to be interested and engaged in your product and really live the brand ethos."

True to his word, Jonathan unfolds his Brompton every morning at his home in Central London and rides to Victoria station, where he catches the Gatwick Express. From there he rides to Evans Cycles HQ - quite the commute. In fact, he's clocked up over 3,500 miles since he joined the company.

For those aiming to become a CFO in the future, Jonathan's main advice is: "Get into the detail. As CFO I would never, ever underestimate the importance of basics like reviewing the trial balance with your team or the key balance sheet reconciliations."

About 1,000 of Evans' 1,300 employees are cyclists, although it's not a requirement if you want to work in the finance department. …
