OKAY, so we're not exactly trying to help you train your kids to be card sharps at casinos in Las Vegas. But playing cards is great family fun. If it's raining outside, there's nothing on telly or, always possible, maybe they've had enough of their PlayStation or Xbox?!

Me and mine have never gone away, abroad or at home, without a pack of cards and it's surprising how many hours it has entertained us.

Here are a few ideas: CLOCK PATK P IENCE GENERALLY for one person, but it can be played with more.

Deal out 13 cards, placing 12 in a circle like the hours on a clock and the last one in the middle.

Deal out the rest of the cards on top of those.

You should end up with four on each pile and the idea of the game is to start by picking up one of the centre cards and look at the number/rank.

Place it face up, next to the point of the clock where it belongs: ace is one, numbers are obvious, jack is 11, queen is 12 and if you pick a king up it goes next to the pile on the centre.

Then pick up a card from the pile that you put the card next to and see where that needs to go.

You keep going until you can't go any more. The aim is to have all the cards face up at the end but that doesn't happen too often.

Count how close you get. This does, indeed, take patience, but it's a good one for quieter times.

FIsh DEAL five cards to each player and put the rest in the middle, face down, for use.

Take it in turns to ask the other players for a particular card, trying to collect as many sets of four as you can. Players must be honest - if you ask for a four of diamonds, they must give it to you or else the game won't work well.

Basically, you can ask a person for any card as long as you have a card of the same number or rank in your hand.

If they don't have the card you want, they say 'fish' and you pick one up from the middle. …
