Back on Race Track; Clifford Park Goes from Zero to Hero in Its Successful Return

TOOWOOMBA Turf Club chairman Bob Frappell believes the Clifford Park course proper can fulfil its potential as one of Australia's premier racing surfaces after a successful return to racing on the track.

The Clifford Park course proper re-opened on Saturday after a three-month lay-off following substantial maintenance work and an extended rehabilitation period.

The meeting went off without a hitch with the track showing no signs of its previous "kick back" problem caused by organic thatching below the surface.

The track's successful first-day return could not have come at a better time for the club, the industry and its members with the gala Weetwood race day at Clifford Park next cab off the rank on May 2.

Frappell praised the work of course manager Chris Nation and Clifford Park track staff for the role they played in helping resurrect the under-pressure course.

"There has been a lot of pressure on everyone to help try and get this right and the track performed right up to the expectations of a StrathAyr surface last night," Frappell said yesterday. …
