Ralph Hangs Up Bell Due to Ill Health

RALPH Cockle still remembers the exact date he became Toowoomba's official town crier.

On July 16, 1997, he was officially appointed after already having taken part in the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers parade on a previous visit.

This year marked the end of that era when the jolly man in a kilt finally hung up his bell and sporran due to ill health.

But he certainly made an impression on the community in that time and the feeling was definitely mutual.

Mr Cockle said he and his wife Shirley had been welcomed into the community with open arms ever since he moved here to take a job as a gas fitter and they couldn't be more thankful.

"The community adopted me very quickly and I was asked to do all kinds of things," he said.

"I was doing 80-100 events a year and I was always supported in my role and I certainly appreciated it.

"About a year ago my health got worse with bone cancer and just recently we discovered it had spread further and chemotherapy wasn't working. …
