PATIENTS and staff, past and present, are encouraged to share their "Rockhampton Mater stories" to mark the Mater Maternity 75-year celebrations on May 15 this year.

From humble beginnings when the Sisters of Mercy bought the grand "Kenmore" mansion for the sum of 4500 pounds from Mr Stuart MacDonald and family on February 1, 1915, to the opening of the first maternity wing on May 15, 1940, these milestones are a worthy occasion to recognise the hundreds of staff and the Sisters, who have contributed immensely to the Mater's rich history.

The celebrations and reflections over the past century have uncovered many great stories to date, including that of Dianne Villiers (nee Toon), her daughter and grandson; three generations born at the Rockhampton Mater.

Dianne, currently a Rockhampton Mater registered nurse, was born on July 18, 1961, at Mater Maternity.

She has many fond memories of the early years at the Mater where she received her nurse training, and the birth of her daughter Nicole in 1985. …
