THE Fraser Coast has recorded a higher than average increase in the number of type 2 diabetes patients.

New Diabetes Queensland statistics released yesterday show the number of people living with type 2 diabetes on the Fraser Coast has jumped 11% in the past two years.

This was higher than the state average increase of 10%.

The figures show there are about 6150 residents in the Fraser Coast local government area who have type 2 diabetes and receive Federal Government support.

This was compared with 5500 people in 2013.

In the wider region, Diabetes Queensland chief Michelle Trute said there were more than 17,000 people with type 2 diabetes, which was also a 10% increase since 2013.

But Ms Trute was concerned there were 47,000 more people living with type 2 diabetes in the Wide Bay region that were undiagnosed, had pre diabetes or were at risk of developing the condition. These regional figures were a combination of Bundaberg, Fraser Coast, Cherbourg, North Burnett, South Burnett and Gympie local government areas. …
