FREEDOM is not free - we must remember the sacrifices that were made for us to be here today.

That was the message from Toowoomba Citizens Anzac Day Commemoration Committee secretary RW "Bill" Hills.

Mr Hills said Anzac Day was a time for people to get together and remember that "freedom is not free".

"We live in the best country, we have the best system and we should remember the people who made it possible for us to have that," he said.

Mr Hills said as well as celebrating the centenary of Anzac Day, the formation of the 25th Battalion - which formed in March of 1915 - was also acknowledged during Saturday's service.

Mr Hill said the committee had been worried that the success of the dawn service, which attracted about 10,000 people, would have a negative impact on the mid-morning service.

"But it didn't suffer at all," he said. "We had about 6000 people and the crowd was on par with last year. …
