DO I need to spend a lot on sunglasses? It's a question I get asked every summer.

Will expensive sunglasses protect my eyes more? Unlikely, Polaroid lenses with 100% UV protection feature on even the cheapest shades (something which is very important to check when buying children's sunnies).

So what merits does buying a designer pair have? It's the same as clothes, the designer brands come up with new shapes and the high street merely copies as best it can.

With designer the materials are superior, expensive frames tend to be lighter weight and more comfortable to wear. This is a consideration of the design and the branding, subtle and discreet or loud and obvious, is part of the price.

For some it's the stamp of quality. They say the most stylish way to build your wardrobe is follow the high-low rule, a mixture of brands at varying price points, spend a little more buying staples and classic pieces and for very high trend items that are more of an experiment, pick up cheaper versions. …
