A DELIGHTFUL afternoon was held at the Maryborough Services Memorial Bowls Club last Tuesday when the ladies from Maryborough and MSM Bowls Clubs competed for the annual Kirk Trophy encounter.

A lot of laughter and camaraderie was heard about the green and the game finished with a fitting result of a tie of 89 points all.

Congratulations to both clubs.

An error with the bowls calendar caused me some confusion a couple of columns ago.

We wrote the info for Maryborough Club Men's Fours Carnival as being a one-day carnival next weekend when it is actually two days on Saturday and Sunday.

My apologies. We followed the calendar information which was incorrect.

There are places available and the club would appreciate a few more teams to contact them and enter for this very good tournament.

If you can be involved, please assist by getting your names in ASAP.

A friend of mine gave me a copy to read of the March issue of Bowls Victoria publication The Shot.

This is their state's version of Qld Bowler magazine.

A very interesting article in their Gripes section from a lady bowler complaining about non-selection of ladies as skips for their pennant competitions.

As you know, some states have a "no gender bias" section of law which insists on female participation in all play.

That is ladies are entitled to be selected in men's competitions, including pennants.

Effectively, all play now being open.

God knows how they can get around the business of getting men-only selections for state and national representation and for that matter, ladies only as well.

Seems dodgy to me.

The lady was putting forward the position that in the main, the majority of teams were being selected with men as skips, even though some of the lady bowlers were top-class bowlers with much more experience.

She had done a survey over 17 clubs with multiple pennant divisions and quoted figures to back up her assertions. …
