Star's Pride over Joint Globe Debut with Daughter

JONATHAN PRYCE said it was "wonderful" to launch the new season at Shakespeare's Globe on stage with his daughter, Phoebe, in her first major role since drama college.

Pryce is making his own Globe debut playing Shylock in The Merchant Of Venice, with Phoebe as the Jewish moneylender's daughter, Jessica. The production opened last night.

Phoebe began her drama studies at Rada at the same age her father did, and also follows in his footsteps by starting work at 25. "It feels like the lineage continues," said Pryce, 67. "I think it's just wonderful -- and she is just so wonderful in the role."

His praise extended to the whole of the company. "It's a beautiful cast. There isn't a weak link in there."

The star admitted he was among Globe critics who thought the late actor/director Sam Wanamaker's plan to recreate Shakespeare's theatre on Bankside was "a heritage or tourist project". …
