TO SOME people change is something to fear, even something to fight.

For others, evolution is exhilarating, a process to be embraced and savoured, an essential part of living.

Multi-award-winning singer-songwriter Catherine Britt is committed to building on the past in order to move forward - passionately, unflinchingly.

"I'd never make the same album twice," Britt says matter-of-factly. "When I get an artist I love's new record, I don't like it if it's the same as another one - I love when they do something brave or different. And I try to live up to what my heroes are doing in that respect."

Anyone who has heard Britt's latest single, Good To Bad, will know she isn't making idle threats when she talks about "brave or different".

Drawing on the best of the singer-songwriter tradition, the track marries a dark atmosphere to a confronting lyric about a depressed young farmer driven to drug-cropping to save his farm.

It's a bold departure for an artist who cut her teeth in Nashville, but has been a stunning success, sending a powerful message about the direction of Catherine's next album, Boneshaker.

Like that lead single, the new record explodes all preconceptions about Britt, adding impressive grit and irresistible grind to her existing songwriting savvy.

"I'm so happy with it," Britt admits of Boneshaker. "But I was definitely nervous.

"It's a huge risk - you're putting your art, your heart, your soul on the line to do something different. Sometimes that pays off, sometimes it doesn't - and I was prepared for it not to work, but I'm very glad it did."

Everything about the making of Boneshaker has been different for Britt: new label, new management and - on the admirable, unselfish advice of country legend Bill Chambers, who has produced all Britt's previous work - a new producer. …
