All Ipswich Open closed junior events were completed last weekend at Chermside Rd.

Doubles winners: Novice -- Riley Cox and Charlie Parker. Runners-up: Edwin Joseph and William Brown.

12's boys: William Brown and Kaito Nelson. Runners-up: Hayden Beattie and Connor Kennedy.

12's girls: Danyela Beattie and Elisha Anderson. Runners-up: Alex Byrnes and Elyssa Pocock.

14's girls: Alex Byrnes and Elyssa Pocock. Runners-up: Danyela Beattie and Elisha Anderson.

16's boys: Mitchell Bell and Jokob Schoenfisch. Runners- up: Nedjo Djordjic and Dylan Osborne.

16's girls: Madeline Arnold and Zoe Raby. Runners-up: Elisha Anderson and Haylee Hutchinson.

THE committee, referee and director faced a nightmare preparing for the start of the Ipswich Open championships.

There was rain, rain and more rain and 150 tennis players drawn to play in the annual tournament with no play on the clay courts possible.

However, matches were contested due to the generosity and co-operation of the Ipswich Junior Association and Ipswich Grammar School.

The two facilities were able to be used from lunchtime Saturday and from 8.30am on Sunday to get matches completed to a stage where the second weekend should flow smoothly.

Officials at both venues deserve thanks for their support, averting what was potentially going to be a non-event.

A shortened format was used for the qualifying matches. Despite players not being keen on the fast four system, they were patient and accepting of the situation. …
