Unwritten Rule of Protecting Your Players Is out of Date

FORMER Arsenal player and Talksport pundit Perry Groves has defended John Carver and said that the "unwritten rule" of not criticising players in public is out-of-date.

The Magpies lost an eighth straight league game under Carver on Saturday and the interim boss made headlines with his comments after the game, criticising the players and accusing Mike Williamson of deliberately getting sent off.

Carver was condemned by many for his comments, but former Arsenal winger Groves, who won two league titles with the Gunners, defended Carver on the Colin Murray and Friends show on Talksport.

He said: "John Carver's taken a lot of stick after his comments about the players. There's a lot of sanctimonious talk from pundits saying that he's gone against the unwritten rule, what goes on in the dressing room stays in the dressing room, and, you shouldn't criticise your players publicly.

"I actually think Carver has come to a situation after the performance against Leicester and he's tried everything with this set of players. …
