LAWN BOWLS: Raymond Head got his 80th birthday present early.

Head won the open singles championship at the North Mackay Bowls Club.

It was the first A-grade title the 79-year-old has won.

"It was a really nice feeling," Head said.

"I didn't put in for the senior singles competition this year. This will do me, for the moment."

Head, who turns 80 in August, said it was nice to beat the younger bowlers at the club to the title.

What makes the victory even more impressive is Head has had two hip replacements.

"They said if I ever need to get it done again I could end up in a wheelchair for the rest of my life, so I just put up with it now," the resilient bowler said.

Head cannot bend one of his legs but that doesn't stop him hitting the greens. He uses a bionic arm while bowling.

For any aspiring lawn bowlers, he had a few tips on becoming a good bowler.
