A LEADING Sunshine Coast businessman has called for the coastal light rail proposal to be dumped in favour of a centralised transport hub at Sippy Downs connecting to high speed rail that would deliver commuters to the heart of the Brisbane CBD within 50 minutes.

CBRE managing director Rem Rafter said he had been given estimates that put light rail out of reach at a cost of up to $6bn.

And he says widening of the Bruce Highway would also be disruptive, enormously expensive and deliver little benefit in terms of improved travel times and lessened congestion.

Mr Rafter says a dedicated west-of-the-highway transport hub including park-and-ride facilities, a train station and bus terminus connecting to all parts of the region was a "no-brainer".

For a total cost of about $2bn, he estimates the project would strip 5% of existing peak-hour traffic.

CBRE director Tony Justo said the region was being constrained by the lack of basic transport infrastructure that if in place, would help draw businesses attracted to the lifestyle the Coast offers. …
