PAID parking will not work at Rockhampton Hospital as a temporary solution.

It will just shift the problem.

As the hospital bosses look for answers to the parking dilemma through public feedback, it threw up a few options for consideration.

One of these was to introduce paid parking with boom-gate access for patients and visitors between 7am and 5pm Monday to Friday at a nominal fee to cover the cost of ticket dispensers, boom gates, pay stations etc.

That won't solve anything but provide low-level discrimination against people who are already on the breadline.

The number of patients attending hospital is likely to increase as this region continues to grow at around 2% a year -- which is about 4000 to 5000 people across the Rockhampton and Livingstone council areas.

Parking has been a problem at the hospital ever since I arrived here in 1998.

In that time there have been at least three major redevelopments of the hospital as various bureaucrats struggle with providing adequate infrastructure to service one of Australia's booming regions. …
