Gold Coast Tweed Scoops Pool at State Competition

Article excerpt

THE Gold Coast Tweed sides swept all before them as the men and women completed the double in taking out the 2015 State District Sides Championships played on the Sunshine Coast last week.

This is the fourth time the feat has been achieved by the Gold Coast Tweed outfits, after 2009, 2010 and 2012.

The women won three games in the Division 1 playoffs, starting with a 44-41 win against Cunningham.

The Sunshine Coast began its quest to annex the state crown for the third successive time in fine style with a 63-39 margin over Tropical Far North Queensland.

The second-round clash against Gold Coast Tweed ended the chase for three in a row as the latter finished in front 48-40.

TFNQ defeated Cunningham 54-43 in round 2.

The Gold Coast Tweed side completed the third round with a perfect record, outpointing TFNQ 53-40 to become the only three-game winner with a combined margin of plus 24.

Cunningham grabbed second place with a 56-35 win against Sunshine Coast, leaving the Sunshine Coast side in third spot and TFNQ not disgraced in fourth position.

Division 2 playoffs were won by Gateway, Division 3 by Wide Bay Gympie, Division 4 by Brisbane North and Division 5 by North Queensland.

The men's playoffs were closely fought but, again, the Gold Coast Tweed was the only three-game winner leading off with a 65-59 effort with Bundaberg.

Gold Coast Tweed followed with a 72-55 margin defeating Brisbane before setting up the decider against the Sunshine Coast.

The local side had lost to Brisbane North by two shots 57-55 and had a two-shot win over Bundaberg, thus it needed to down Gold Coast Tweed by 12 to take the title.

It was not to be in a classic finish. The Sunshine Coast lost on the last end 68-67 to fall into third place with Brisbane North second and Bundaberg in fourth spot. …
