Inspiring Females: Women in Education

THE North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) recently invited the region's business people to question a panel of Women in Education during an Inspiring Females event at Gateshead College.

Chair of the NECC's Women's Advisory Board, Nicki Gott, welcomed business women from around the North East, keen to discuss the benefits of linking business with education.

The panel: Gillian Miller, Associate of Colleges; Helen Clegg OBE, Northern Education Trust; Dr Jane Turner, Northumbria University; and Judith Doyle from NECC's 200th anniversary patron Gateshead College, shared their varied career paths and offered advice gathered from their experiences, both professional and personal.

Amongst a host of incisive questioning the panel was asked what people could be doing to inspire the North East's next generation of business people.

"Influence through education is enormous," said Judith Doyle.

"We need to plant a seed of possibility and promote a prosperous future for our communities. Working with parents and offering impartial advice and guidance to students is imperative. There is a real lack of awareness about what opportunities are out there."

It was agreed that an effort had to be made to inspire the next generation with Helen Clegg OBE driving the point: "Some children come from families who are fourth or fifth generation unemployed," she said. …
