DON'T destroy what you came to enjoy.

It's Naomi Buttigieg's motto, but she said an increasing number of people pay no attention to the little piece of wisdom and are covering local beaches with litter.

Since 2009 the amount of litter the volunteer has hauled off Mackay's Northern Beaches has steadily risen.

"At the end of 2010 I thought I better start keeping track and documenting this," she said.

"There was so much of it."

But while rubbish from the ocean terrified her, it's litter left by locals that frustrates her most.

On Mother's Day morning she collected several beer bottles and cider cans from Bucasia Beach.

Another beach-goer Jan Cunningham was also disgusted to find three empty bourbon bottles, eight cider cans, a dozen stubbies, a bottle of wine, broken glass, four empty deodorant cans and a dangerously smouldering fire at the beach 8am Mother's Day morning.

"It's really a beautiful beach and we enjoy such spectacular scenery," Mrs Cunningham said. …
