Clunes Unveils His Pet Project; PICK OF THE DAY Man & Beast with Martin Clunes (ITV, 9pm)

ANIMAL or travel documentaries seem to be the natural habitat for actors these days. Clearly in showbusiness, you're no one if you haven't climbed a mountain or bathed with an elephant.

And in this case, it's perhaps even less of a surprise to see Martin Clunes hosting this two-parter on the relationship between man and beast, since he and his wife own the production company. There would have been trouble with the missus if the job had gone to Griff Rhys Jones or Michael Palin.

As it happens, the Doc Martin and Men Behaving Badly star has always been fascinated by all creatures great and small.

"Almost every day it seems I acquire more of them," says Martin, who owns dogs, horses and chickens, and has a working farm in Dorset where he breeds sheep and cattle.

And now he is embarking on an international journey to investigate men working alongside everything from birds to bears, pets to primates.

"Man and beast have shared the planet, but we've always appointed ourselves as the dominant species," he explains. …
