ARSENE WENGER refused to be drawn today on whether he will move for England star Raheem Sterling.

The Liverpool forward sparked further transfer speculation today after it emerged he will tell Liverpool on Friday that he will turn down a new contract and seek a summer move.

The Gunners are among a host of clubs monitoring the situation but Wenger insists he is not close to signing anyone and is only focused on Arsenal's remaining games.

"At the moment we are not in a transfer mode," he said. "We want to finish our season well. We have put massive effort in since the start of the season to come back into a potentially good position in the Premier League, and now we need to focus on finishing well. We have put so much effort in that it would be stupid not to finish the job well. The transfer period comes after the FA Cup Final."

Asked specifically whether Arsenal would bid for Sterling, Wenger said: "I do not bid for anybody at the moment. In the summer we will bid for people. At the moment we are not in transfer mode at all. You absolutely want me to say something that I don't want to say. If I say that I will and I don't do it, then I have lied."

Sterling's agent claimed this morning that stories suggesting the 20-year-old is on the brink of leaving were premature amid reports he has turned down a PS100,000-aweek extension on his deal, which has two years to run. …
