MORE than 20 fiction, young adult fiction and non-fiction writers and poets will address this year's Bellingen Readers and Writers Festival theme, politics and society.

Magic lives in the work of the novelists whose books delve into social and/or political issues including parental physical abuse, single mothers with children from a succession of departed men, sexual abuse, teenage pregnancy, a woman's midlife crisis and teenage lives in struggle town.

Like her debut novel, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Jessie Cole's second novel Deeper Water paints a vivid and realistic image of life in a small town and its surrounding valleys in Northern NSW, peopled with characters familiar to the Bellinger Valley.

Diana Sweeney's debut The Minnow won the 2013 Text Prize for Young Adult and Children's Writing and has been shortlisted in the 2015 Children's Book Council of Australia Awards.

The protagonist is teenage girl Tom who has lost her parents, sister and home in a devastating flood. She has a grandmother in a local nursing home and a good friend, but not much else.
