JOhN Carver says Newcastle United will spend the money required to avoid another Premier League relegation battle, having hung on to their top-flight status.

Second-half goals from Moussa Sissoko and Jonas Gutierrez were enough to ensure they did not have to rely on results elsewhere on a tense final day.

Mike Ashley broke his selfimposed media silence in a prematch television interview, insisting he has no plans to relinquish his ownership of the club.

And Carver says lessons have been learnt as they strive to avoid another season of struggle.

"We can't afford to get ourselves in this situation ever again," said the head coach, who reiterated his desire to take the job on a permanent basis.

"We all know we have made mistakes - everybody - and we have admitted those mistakes.

"This is a big summer now and I have had assurances that we are going to spend money.

"So the fans can now go away, have their summer holidays, look forward to players coming through the door, but also look forward to that fixture list coming through."

Adamant there were never any doubts in his mind that Newcastle's players were up for the fight, Carver said: "Let's talk about the week, because I think it's very important.

"We realised that this was a Champions League final and we prepared for a big game.

"I have been in a dressing room once before in a play-offfinal when I looked in people's eyes and they didn't fancy that cup final.

"I sat in the dressing room today and looked into people's eyes, and we were ready for this game.

"You can still say 'Why for the one game that you have to win have you put in a performance like that?'. But we have, because this was the situation.
