AN ENTHUSIASTIC Macksville outfit caught Grafton off guard early and the defending premiers never recovered on a boggy Allen Gillett Oval at Macksville.

Winger Mitch Gorman scored two tries for Ghosts, but overall Grafton lacked opportunities to penetrate out wide and went down 24 to 22.

"they come out a bit more keen than us and we were just weren't ready for it," Ghosts centre Matt Muller said.

"We didn't get a lot of opportunities to spread it out to the backs and it was more of a forward battle.

"It's definitely was a big wake up call for us. Everyone knew we had to step it up and play better footy after the Bellingen game, but after Macksville had a draw with Nambucca I think we went in over-confident, they came out firing and we couldn't get back into it."
