ARCHITECTS say they hope to create 'a beacon' in the heart of Newcastle's Ouseburn valley after filing plans for 34 new homes.

Carillion Igloo, which is currently building the Malings scheme on the east bank of the river, has moved up its plans for a new block next to the Toffee Factory.

And the building firm's bosses hope the proposed development's eight story tower - and its translucent cladding - will create a glowing heart for the area.

Igloo deputy chief executive David Roberts said the levels of interest in its Malings flats - which will see the first new homeowners move in next month - had allowed the firm to press ahead with the next stage of its plans.

"We're keen to get on with it and if planning consent is granted for Lower Steenberg's Yard this summer then we hope to start work in September and be completed by the end of next year or the beginning of the year after, with people moving in by the early part of 2017.

"While over the river the first phase of the Malings, which included 34 homes, will see the first owners moving in in June, with the second phase of 25 homes going on sale at around the same time, and the final 17 on sale in spring 2016.

"It's all very satisfying because we've been working on these plans for nearly ten years and now we are finally almost able to welcome people in."

Mr Roberts said so far the reaction to the proposed Ouse Street development had been mixed, with some worried and others commenting the design was "very Ouseburn."

"I think you've got to think about this in terms of the already existing architecture, and only up the hill you have the Byker Wall. Hopefully we are speaking the same kind of architectural language, and can create a waymark in the centre of valley. …
