Unlocking Lindt Mysteries

Article excerpt

THE Lindt research stemmed from a series of photographs taken in 1873 and 1874 by German-born, Grafton-based photographer John William Lindt. The photographs were of some Aboriginal residents of the Clarence Valley at that time. In 2004 an album of 37 of these photographs (33 of which contain Aboriginal people) were bought at auction by Sam and Janet Cullen and family and donated to the Clarence Valley community.

This significant donation was followed by a concerted effort to identify the Aboriginal people depicted in the famous photos. The first research project in 2010 was carried out by local historian Nola Mackey with the support of the Clarence Valley Council. In October 2014 a seven-month research project, Breimba -- looking for you: Lindt Research Project (aka Breimba Lindt Project), was launched. This project was supported by the University of New England (UNE), the Clarence Valley Council, Grafton Regional Gallery, The Gallery Foundation and Friends of the Gallery. The search's aims and directions have been overseen by the Lindt Research Group, a committee of local Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community members.

The research positively identified three people in the JW Lindt photos: Mary Ann Williams (nee Cowan), King Harry Neville, and Arthur Devlin as shown in the photo 31, the reclining figure and confirmed many first names or nicknames.

The complete Lindt Research Project: Breimba -- looking for you will be publicly available by August 2015 at the Sir Earle Page Library & Education Centre. The digital files are locked to prevent alterations and the paper files cannot be borrowed. Members of the public will be able print or copy part or all of the research collection.

The Breimba -- looking for you: Lindt Research Project Final Report and the Breimba Lindt Notebook were written by Annika Korsgaard. Research documents collected in the Breimba Lindt Digital Research Collection were collected and collated by Annika Korsgaard and Roberta Skinner with assistance from members of the public. …
