Students Flock to the Bay; Hervey Bay Ready to Host Queensland's Best

IT IS the day Hervey Bay Hockey Association has eagerly anticipated for months.

Poor weather means there is still more work to be done on the dugouts but Hervey Bay's new surface will be blessed by some of the state's premier junior hockey players from today.

The Queensland Under-19 School Girls Hockey Championship will start this morning with Wide Bay the first team to hit the field.

Wide Bay will look to improve on last year's effort and will lift in front of friends and family on their home turf.

Competition convenor Lynette Pritchard said 10 regions would compete, drawing about 160 players - and their families - to the Fraser Coast.

She said the new turf, which made its competition debut in the local competition earlier this year, had made Hervey Bay more appealing for major events.

"It's increased our numbers in both juniors and seniors," she said.

"We were hopeful as a lot of people travel to other regions to play. …
