Indelbu Fights off Hudspith Challenge to Take 5k; ATHLETICS

CLEVELAND-BASED Ethiopian Wondiye Fikre Indelbu fought off the challenge of Morpeth veteran Ian Hudspith to win yesterday's Middlesbrough Riverside 5km, which took place around the town's football ground.

The Paralympian 1,500m bronze medallist, second in 2014 and now running in the Crook colours, came home with two secs to spare over Hudspith, who is 45 in September.

The runner-up had won the race in 2010 and 2012 and was third last year. In third place was another Ethiopian, Tadele Geremew, of Elswick. Justina Heslop, wife of Geremew, easily won the women's race, finishing 31st overall in the 1,200-strong field. Josephine Stone of Middlesbrough Mandale took second place ahead of Steph McLean Dann, of North Shields Poly, who was the first veteran (Over 40) home.

North East athletes won two of the main events at Saturday's British Milers Club Grand Prix Meeting at Sport City.

Shildon's Cameron Boyek gained victory in the 1,500m, clocking 3mins 40. …
