WOOD CHOPPING: With two generations of world champions who came before him, Buderim's Josh Adamson had little choice but to pick up an axe.

Adamson's grandfather, Doug, and father Gary were multiple world and national champion wood choppers so it was only natural he too would carve out his own legacy.

"I started out when I was just starting to walk and had a little tomahawk I used to carry around," Adamson said.

"It is a family thing and my grandad was a wood chopper and it has sort of followed through from dad and then to me.

"Grandad started out as a timber cutter and won world titles and plenty of championships and was quite a good axeman as was my dad."

The 28-year-old began competition in 2001 and has made a steady rise into the open ranks as evidenced in his 2014 national title and a third-placing at the world titles in 2013.

Adamson will swing his "sword" at the Stihl Timbersport Series at Toowoomba today, kick-starting a massive season in the sport. …
