FAVORITE

1. AMERICAN PHAROAH

Odds: 4-5

Record, earnings: 6 races (5-wins, 0-place, 0-show); $2,830,300

Sire: Pioneerof the Nile

Dam: Littleprincessemma

Jockey: Victor Espinoza

Trainer: Bob Baffert

Owner: Zayat Stables, LLC

Breeder: Zayat Stables

Comment: Derby win did not come easy and return in two weeks a cause for concern. Inside post not best, but not a huge problem with small field. Short odds means the search doesn't stop here.

2. DORTMUND

Odds: 7-2

Record, earnings: 7 races (6-wins, 0-place, 1-show); $1,489,800

Sire: Big Brown

Dam: Our Josephina

Jockey: Martin Garcia

Trainer: Bob Baffert

Owner: Kaleem Shah Inc.

Breeder: Emilie Gerlinde Fojan

Comment: Pacesetter in Derby could not stay with top two in stretch. Might be pressed early by others seeking pace-setting role. Impossible to throw out, but might have seen his best two weeks ago.

3. MR. Z

Odds: 20-1

Record, earnings: 13 races (1-win, 4-place, 4-show); $652,226

Sire: Malibu Moon

Dam: Stormy Bear

Jockey: Corey Nakatani

Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas

Owner: Calumet Farm

Breeder: Richard D. Maynard

Comment: Sold earlier in week but Lukas remains as trainer for new owner, Calumet Farm. Colt on a 12-race losing streak and will need plenty more than change of silks to contend in this one.

4. DANZIG MOON

Odds: 15-1

Record, earnings: 6 races (1-win, 2-place, 0-show); $311,120

Sire: Malibu Moon

Dam: Leaveminthedust

Jockey: Julien Leparoux

Trainer: Mark Casse

Owner: John C. Oxley

Breeder: William D. Graham

Comment: Stalker in Derby also benefited from slow pace, hanging around late to finish fifth. Has been improving with each start. If there's a big upset in the cards, this one is the ace.

5. TALE OF VERVE

Odds: 30-1

Record, earnings: 6 races (1-win, 1-place, 2-show); $54,600

Sire: Tale of Ekati

Dam: Verve

Jockey: Joel Rosario

Trainer: Dallas Stewart

Owner: Charles Fipke

Breeder: Charles Fipke

Comment: Enthusiasm of connections probably not shared by the horse. …
