DO YOU realise Queensland Garden Expo, held annually at the Nambour Showgrounds and credited with being one of Australia's largest gardening events, will be 30 years old this year?

And just to ensure you know exactly when it is, put Friday to Sunday, July 11-13, in the diary.

The action-packed program will again feature the Giant Kitchen Garden incorporating a totally organic food court and innumerable lectures and workshops, with popular Barb Wickes organising the whole set-up.

ISN'T there a wonderful lot of beautiful colour displayed in our gardens and parks at this time of year.

With occasional showers and sunny days, nature is certainly being kind to the Sunshine Coast.

Have you ever noticed how much the bright yellow flowers and foliage catch your eye as you walk or drive along the roads, and those popular golden pendas (Xanthostemon sp.) are really enjoying the season.

The Fairhill Gold forms of this Australian native are ideal for almost every garden here, as they grow about 3m tall and 2m wide, but are not difficult to retain a metre or so lower if you wish.

They need moist, well-drained soil, and do best in full sun or part shade, bursting into flower several times annually

A perfect little perennial to grow as a border is the chrysanthemum "pacificum", which is a Japanese form of this popular family, with attractive lobed leaves finely edged in silvery white on a mounded evergreen plant. It grows about 30cm or so tall, bursting into an abundance of sprays of golden yellow flowers right through autumn and beyond.

The very popular yellow allamandas probably have one in the family to suit most situations, with the well-known climber that provides an eye-catching show of its richly coloured flowers for many months of the warm weather. …
