Cliffe Keen for Challenge; Teenager's First Year in Code

RUGBY UNION: Tom Cliffe is a freak sportsman.

The 17-year-old began playing rugby union this year and he's already been chosen for representative duties.

Tomorrow and Monday, Cliffe will play in the under-19 North Queensland side in the Country Championships in Port Douglas.

"It's all pretty surreal because this is my first year of rugby," he said.

"It will be a really good opportunity for me because they select a team for Queensland Country for this team.

"As it's a country team and rugby union isn't all that big in regional Queensland I might have an opportunity to get my name up the ranks a bit."

Cliffe was chosen for the team from the North Queensland Rugby Championships in Airlie Beach last month.

The winger scored four tries in the game against Mt Isa, he is the leading try scorer in the Mackay Rugby Union competition, where he plays for Mackay City.

What makes the feat even more remarkable is Cliffe is a multi-disciplined sportsman -- competing in hockey and athletics. …
