ONE of the few disadvantages of your kids moving out is that you've no one else to blame for the chaos and mess.

The pile of "get around to it" paperwork and the dirty boots in the hall are mine - and mine alone. I'll probably sort them all this weekend. Except that if the weather's fine this morning I'll be cutting the grass and planting out the last of the bedding plants. Then I'll be seeing a chum this afternoon. And I'm going to be walking with friends tomorrow.

Well, maybe another time. But by then the chaos will be greater and that'll be even more of reason not to sort things out.

It's too easy to put off those chores - although I hate the mess and if neighbours or friends pop round, I feel ashamed and spend my time apologising. And now I know what they must think. A survey this week showed that visitors to our homes make a snap judgment within 26 seconds.

First impressions really do count.

According to the poll, a comfy sofa, good coffee and soft hand towels are the key factors in impressing guests - well, I've got those, so maybe they ignore the mess. …
