Mortar Bomb Bunker Find Definitely Not Par for Course

ARELAXING Sunday on the golf course turned into quite the adventure after play was interrupted - by a Second World War bomb launcher.

One golfer found himself in a bit of a hole after he battled to get his ball out of the bunker on the seventh of Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course in Northumberland.

Using the rake to smooth out the disturbed sand, the player uncovered something he had not been expecting - the World War Two mortar bomb.

After reporting the find to club bosses, police, the coastguard and the bomb squad were called in, setting up a 30-metre cordon around the device.

Play in the Men's Club Competition was suspended as weapons experts arrived from Catterick to secure the device.

Lynn Ferguson, from the club, said: "The police came first, then the Coastguard, then the bomb squad. It was all quite exciting."

As the cordon went up at around 10.30am yesterday, play in the competition had to be called off for several hours while the bomb disposal team made sure the device was not a risk. …
