THE increasingly busy pace of modern life is a key factor behind a 40 % drop in new blood donors since 2004, according to NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), which provides blood supplies for England and North Wales.

They cite "longer hours, commuting further and spending more time online", as important reasons why fewer of us are becoming blood donors for the first time.

This stark decline in the number of new donors coming forward over the last decade is a problem as each year NHS Blood and Transplant needs to replace those who can't donate, while also providing the right types of blood for patients in the future.
