Double Murder Accused 'Loved Parents Dearly'

DOUBLE murder accused Martin Ruddy was very close to his parents and "loved them dearly", his cousin told a court.

Ruddy is alleged to have killed mum Carol and dad Eric then staged a burglary and injured himself to cover his tracks.

His cousin Kerry Dickinson said on the night of the alleged killings she rang her auntie Carol's home looking for Ruddy after his wife contacted her to say she was looking for him.

Miss Dickinson said someone picked up the phone but didn't speak and all she could hear was the television in the background.

She told jurors at Newcastle Crown Court: "When it was answered I could just hear the telly. I said 'hello, hello, who is it', ' then it went off."

Miss Dickinson said she thought that was unusual and said her aunt would usually answer the phone.

She said: "She kept the phone in her bra because she was disabled and if she went to the toilet or the kitchen she hated missing the a phone call.

"If she missed a call she would ring back to see who it was."

Miss Dickinson said she then called back a second time and the phone rang then cut off at the other end.

She said she then got a message on Facebook from Ruddy's wife saying Ruddy, Carol and Eric had been attacked.

Under cross-examination by Ruddy's barrister, Miss Dickinson was asked about the accused's relationship with his alleged victims.

She said: "Martin was very close to both his parents, he loved them dearly.

"He cared for his mam after she had an operation which left her disabled. About ten years ago she had a tumour and went to have an operation and ended up having a massive stroke which left her disabled down one side.

"Martin used to take her to all her appointments and took her shopping. If she phoned and said she wanted to go here, he would take her in the car."

Miss Dickinson also said Ruddy was generous with money, and when asked about his two young children, she replied: "He is a fab dad. …
